GPATS Horizon 2050 Long-range Transportation Plan Online Meeting 2

GPATS brings together local governments, the SCDOT, and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to plan and build an effective regional transportation system.

The LRTP lists multimodal projects, ranked by priority and funding, that are planned for completion over the next 25 years.

When high-priority projects are nearly ready for construction, they move from the LRTP to the Transportation Improvement Program, which sets funding for projects over the next 10 years

Previous and Current LRTP Projects

A total of 190 stakeholders participated in Round 1 outreach through various in-person and online meetings.

Most common concerns & issues:

Poor signal timing and overloaded intersections due to area growth.

Older, poorly configured or maintained roads are causing issues for all users.

Connectivity issues are making it harder to use alternative forms of transportation.

A need for better system-level planning and regional connectivity.

This online map allows users to provide categorized feedback on transportation needs across the study area. 86 map comments have been received as of June 21, 2026.

Safety concerns at specific intersections or along roadways

Traffic congestion during peak hours near schools or along major corridors

The need for more connected walking and biking infrastructure

Projects are identified through the existing conditions assessment, existing transportation plans, and public and stakeholder feedback from community outreach. Selection criteria are then used to move projects through the process to determine how well a proposed project supports the MPO’s goals.

Points are awarded to projects based on the number of Guiding Statement and objectives that they meet. Points are also awarded by the type of transportation project it is (bus, bike, pedestrian).

Culture and Environment	Create transportation connections that improve access for low-income populations.
Growth and Development	Plan and implement transportation infrastructure that fits within neighborhood and business district context.
Safety and Security	Reduce fatal and serious crashes.
Economic Value	Support freight movement along primary freight corridors.
Mobility and Accessibility	Limit peak hour congestion through strategies that reflect corridor function and land use context. Improve the reliability of the multimodal transportation system so people and goods can reach key destinations predictably, without prioritizing roadway expansion as the primary congestion solution. Promote projects listed in the CMP or RMP. Improve the safety, comfort, and connectivity of bicycle and pedestrian networks. Improve transit reliability and service frequency.
Systems preservation and efficiency	Maintain functionally classified pavement in Fair or Good condition. Use transportation system management and operations (TSMO) strategies and improvements to improve system efficiency and reliability.

Emphasis: These are projects or corridors that the public report as important during public engagement meetings for 2050 LRTP.

GPATS’ guiding statements align with the region’s planning needs, established in accordance with national, state, and regional long-range planning goals. They also help inform which types of projects are most interesting and most important to communities.
